Oefening

Op 9/11 was het verdedigingsapparaat van de VS bezig met een oefening die erg leek op wat er later die dag zou gaan gebeuren. De straaljagers waren helemaal naar de Canadese grens gestuurd. Allemaal opzet, volgens de complotters. Door verwarring te stichten kon niet tijdig worden ingegrepen.

Laat nou ongeveer hetzelfde zijn gebeurd in juli 2005, toen in Londen tijdens de ochtendspits vier bommen ontploften, drie in de metro en een aan boord van een bus, en 56 mensen omkwamen. Althans, dat beweert Zapruder's Patman weer eens in zijn jongste praatje op het radiostation 100%NL. Patman stelt doodleuk dat de hele aanslag is georkestreerd door inlichtingendiensten om er wetten doorheen te drukken. Alsof dat verhaal al niet krankjorum genoeg is, verzint hij er ook nog eens bij dat de vier jongens die de bommen bij zich droegen (en zijn omgekomen) erin geluisd zijn omdat ze dachten dat ze mee zouden doen aan een oefening.

Toegegeven: Patman heeft het verhaaltje niet helemaal zelf uit de duim gezogen, hij las het natuurlijk weer eens op een van die vele complotsites die hij zo graag frequenteert. "Waarom hoor ik er nu pas over?" wil deejay Eline de la Croix van Patman weten. "Omdat jij waarschijnlijk de Volkskrant of zo leest," reageert Patman. Het antwoord had moeten luiden: omdat ik de verkeerde sites raadpleeg en alles voor apenkool aanneem.

Want hoe zit dat nu precies met die zogenaamde oefeningen? Volgens Patman is het allemaal bij de BBC te horen geweest. Daar werd een zekere Peter Power geïnterviewd. Power werkte ooit voor Scotland Yard en wordt vaak voor de microfoon gehaald als het om terrorististische aanslagen gaat. Tegenwoordig heeft hij een eigen bedrijf Visor Consultants, dat managers leert hoe ze moeten reageren in het geval van rampen, kidnapping en terroristische aanslagen.

Power bij BBC Radio 5: "At half past nine this morning we were actually running an exercise for a company of over a thousand people in London based on simultaneous bombs going off precisely at the railway stations where it happened this morning, so I still have the hairs on the back of my neck standing up right now."

Presentator: "To get this quite straight, you were running an exercise to see how you would cope with this and it happened while you were running the exercise?"

Power: "Precisely, and it was about half past nine this morning, we planned this for a company and for obvious reasons I don't want to reveal their name but they're listening and they'll know it. And we had a room full of crisis managers for the first time they'd met and so within five minutes we made a pretty rapid decision that this is the real one and so we went through the correct drills of activating crisis management procedures to jump from slow time to quick time thinking and so on."

Je zou zeggen, het citaat is zo duidelijk als wat. Power was bij een Londens bedrijf van ongeveer duizend werknemers bezig een rampscenario door te nemen in een ruimte vol 'crisismanagers', toen min of meer gebeurde wat in dat scenario stond. Fictie werd werkelijkheid. Logisch dat daar je haren van overeind gaan staan.

Maar complotsite Prison Planet van Alex Jones bakte er het volgende van: "Power told the (radio)host that at the exact same time that the London bombings were taking place, his company was running a 1,000 person strong exercise which drilled the London Underground being bombed at the exact same locations, at the exact same times, as happened in real life."

Volkomen fout geïnterpreteerd natuurlijk. Ten eerste ging het niet om London Underground, maar om een niet nader genoemd bedrijf in Londen van circa duizend werknemers (bij de Londense tube werken alleen al zo'n 16.000 mensen). Ten tweede was het een papieren oefening in een vergaderruimte. In de ondergrondse was dus helemaal geen oefening gaande. Toch pennen Nederlandse complotters het verhaaltje van Prison weer eens klakkeloos over.

Met alle gevolgen van dien, want die Power werd vervolgens gek gemaild door honderden complotdombo's. Om ze van repliek te dienen formuleerde hij de volgende standaard reactie: "Given the volume of emails about events on 7 July and a commonly expressed misguided belief that our exercise revealed prescient behaviour, or was somehow a conspiracy (noting that several websites interpreted our work that day in an inaccurate / naive / ignorant / hostile manner) it has been decided to issue a single email response as follows: It is confirmed that a short number of 'walk through' scenarios planed [sic] well in advance had commenced that morning for a private company in London (as part of a wider project that remains confidential) and that two scenarios related directly to terrorist bombs at the same time as the ones that actually detonated with such tragic results. One scenario in particular, was very similar to real time events.

"However, anyone with knowledge about such ongoing threats to our capital city will be aware that (a) the emergency services have already practiced several of their own exercises based on bombs in the underground system (also reported by the main news channels) and (b) a few months ago the BBC broadcast a similar documentary on the same theme, although with much worse consequences. It is hardly surprising therefore, that we chose a feasible scenario - but the timing and script was nonetheless, a little disconcerting.

"In short, our exercise (which involved just a few people as crisis managers actually responding to a simulated series of activities involving, on paper, 1000 staff) quickly became the real thing and the players that morning responded very well indeed to the sudden reality of events.

"Beyond this no further comment will be made and based on the extraordinary number of messages from ill informed people, no replies will henceforth be given to anyone unable to demonstrate a bona fide reason for asking (e.g. accredited journalist / academic)."

Zelfs andere complotsites hebben Prison Planet terecht op deze canard gewezen, maar Patman is het kennelijk allemaal weer eens ontgaan en verzint er nog een verhaal bij ook om het allemaal nog cooler te maken. "Dit is serieus waar,"roept hij ook nog eens in de uitzending als de zogenaamde oefening ter sprake komt. Beste 100%NL, wordt het niet eens tijd dat jullie deze complotklojo aan de kant zetten?
